GrInHy2.0 for Low-CO₂ Steelmaking

The world’s largest High-Temperatur Electrolyzer was successfully delivered by Sunfire GmbH within the GrInHy2.0 project, in which Tenova plays an important role to support moving from coal to hydrogen in the steel production.

Sunfire GmbH – company that develops and manufactures systems for renewable industrial gas and fuel production – announced the successful delivery of the world’s most powerful High-Temperature Electrolyzer (HTE) for highly energy-efficient hydrogen production to Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH.

Within the GrInHy2.0 project, Sunfire’s HTE system with a rated electrical output of 720 kilowatts will be deployed in an industrial environment for the first time. The electrolyzer is expected to be in operation for at least 13,000 hours by the end of 2022, while producing at least 100 tons of green hydrogen from renewable electricity.

Tenova is involved in GrInHy2.0 by providing a technical and economic study to accompany the decarburization of European steel industry through the conversion at a very low CO2, green-hydrogen-based steel production.

GrInHy2.0 is another step by Salzgitter AG towards low CO2 steel production within the framework of the innovation project SALCOS®, where Tenova’s ENERGIRON-ZR-direct reduction technology, the innovative HYL Direct Reduction Technology with integrated CO2 absorption system and ready to use up to 100% hydrogen - jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli – plays a crucial role.

"Our cooperation with Salzgitter and Sunfire could lead to a revolution in the European steel industry. Our extensive know-how and experience of the new process route DRP-EAF – that we have been optimizing for years with the goal to minimize the carbon footprint – together with innovative hydrogen production solutions form the ideal combination to achieve the sustainable transformation of the steel industry"
