HYBRIT Chooses Tenova DRI Technology

HYBRIT Chooses Tenova DRI Technology

Tenova was contracted by HYBRIT to supply its DRI solution for the world’s first fossil-free steel-making technology with virtually no carbon footprint in Sweden.

A plant that produces fossil-free steel thanks to hydrogen technology: this is the goal of HYBRIT, a joint-venture project between SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall, that selected Tenova HYL Direct Reduced Iron solution for its pilot plant in Luleå, Sweden.

In 2016, HYBRIT was established with the aim to replace coking coal, traditionally needed for ore-based steel making, with hydrogen, a fossil-free steel-making technology, with virtually no carbon footprint.  HYBRIT set specific target toward the construction and operation of a pilot plant with the aim to test hydrogen as reducing agent in the production of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI).

Thanks to the unique characteristics of its process and its specific expertise in direct reduction with high content of hydrogen, Tenova HYL perfectly fitted with HYBRIT project. The Tenova company based in Mexico was chosen also thanks to the maneuverability of the production of DRI, adding unique flexibility in terms of operations. Moreover, the experience gained in nearly 60 years of Direct Reduction technology development and the references of more than 40 DR modules in operation makes Tenova HYL a reliable partner for innovative process.

I am particularly excited and proud of being part of this projectTenova puts innovation, safety and sustainability at the core of its technological innovations and products and Tenova HYL represents the state of the art in DR plants design, reliable operation, environmental friendliness and economy
