Castellanza, March 21, 2023 – Tenova, a leading developer and provider of sustainable solutions for the green transition of the metals industry, will supply an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) equipped with Consteel® and Electromagnetic Stirrer Consteerrer® to Tenaris for its Campana mill in Argentina.

The new Consteel® EAF will replace one of the two existing EAF units and will result in the same productivity of the two existing EAFs combined. The new Consteel® EAF will guarantee a production capacity of 950,000 tons of liquid steel for seamless pipe manufacturing. In addition to the Consteel® EAF, Tenova’s scope of work also includes the Consteerer® and its engineering services.

Tenova’s Consteerrer® technology is an innovative electro-magnetic stirring system, developed through an exclusive worldwide partnership with ABB. It offers significantly low operating costs, extremely reliable and safe operations, as well as superior quality steel. The Consteerrer® enhances the Consteel® Evolution process with ABB’s ArcSave® non-contact electromagnetic stirring of the furnace’s liquid bath and can be customized to match the needs of different EAF process steps.

This project has been designed to minimize the client’s overall investment by keeping the existing facilities and plants, in addition to enhancing the technological solutions and innovations of the one existing EAF remaining in operation. Due to the specific design of the proven Consteel® technology, the current fume treatment plant will continue to be used without any significant changes. The water treatment system will also not require any modifications. The layout of the Consteel® conveyor will fit the existing facilities such as the scrapyard and bucket car, and the new EAF will keep the same charging mix from the existing furnace.

In addition to the main advantage of this patented installation – in other words the possibility to charge pre-heated scrap continuously by recovering heat from hot fumes – the flexibility in the charging mix has been retained thanks to the option to also charge the EAF with Direct Reduced Iron (DRI)”, said Silvio Reali, Tenova Senior Vice President.

At Tenaris, we are transforming our productive process to meet new requirements for cleaner steel. The Consteel Furnace is part of a series of investment projects that will allow us not only to continue adding productive capacity in our steel shop, but also to reduce the CO2 emission intensity of our steel process. Together, with the use of the renewable electricity from the wind farm we are building in Argentina, it will result in a significant reduction of our carbon footprint, in line with our 2030 decarbonization goal", said Javier Martínez Álvarez, President for Tenaris Southern Cone.
