Tenova to Supply Germany's Largest Electric Arc Furnace for HKM's Transformation

Castellanza, August 3, 2026 - Tenova, a leading developer and provider of sustainable solutions for the green transition of the metals industry, will supply the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) for the transformation of Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann (HKM) in Duisburg, Germany, into a low-emission steelmaking plant. The electric arc furnace, with its design capacity of 2.5 million tons per year, will rank as the largest in Germany and one of the largest in Europe, joining a portfolio of ultra-large EAF installations delivered by Tenova across the continents. The EAF will be equipped with Tenova's Consteel® continuous scrap charging technology and the Electro Magnetic Stirring (EMS) System, developed in partnership with ABB. The new installation will become the technological heart of HKM's transition toward low-emission steel production, supporting the long-term transformation strategy of its new owner, Salzgitter AG.

This investment marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Duisburg-Huckingen steelworks, one of Germany's historic steel production sites. By replacing the existing blast furnace route with electric steelmaking, HKM will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of its operations while ensuring future competitiveness of the plant. As one of the most significant industrial transformation projects currently underway in the European steel industry, it demonstrates how advanced process technologies can combine with operational excellence to foster sustainable decarbonization.

The project builds on Tenova's long-standing leadership in ultra-large, continuously charged EAFs and represents the latest evolution of a proven technological package integrating Consteel® and EMS. This combination reliably delivers outstanding productivity while allowing maximum flexibility in the use of raw materials. At the same time, it reduces energy consumption, minimizes environmental impact and limits disturbances to the power grid, further enhancing the overall efficiency and sustainability of the steelmaking process.

Tenova's scope of supply includes a 285t Consteel® EAF, complete with auxiliary plants on a turnkey basis. The furnace is designed to deliver a continuous production rate of 380t per hour to the existing secondary metallurgy line and slab caster, enabling production of high-quality flat steel products, including grades meeting the stringent standards of the automotive industry for exposed body parts. The new facility will be installed in a dedicated building within the HKM production site.
