Overview
The product range of Pomini Tenova embraces Fully Automatic CNC Roll Loaders, with either two or three controlled axes, combining high handling speeds without standing positioning accuracy, for faster roll handling and enhanced grinder productivity.
The focus is shifting towards better integration of heterogeneous machinery into a complete system that functions as if it were coordinated by a single “mind”
The Automatic Roll Loading System (ARLS) is an integrated facility with the purpose to carry out the handling of all work rolls and, if applicable, intermediate rolls within a segregated area in a fully or partly automatic way, depending on the specific case. The ARLS can perform the following tasks:
- Loading/unloading of the roll grinders and texturing machines;
- Unmatching/matching of roll pairs (if pairing option is purchased);
- Handling of rolls from and to the storage racks.
The facility includes the following units:
- Automatic roll loader with special lifting tong
- Roll racks
- WinLoader software
- Safety fences with access gates,
- Anti-collision system
- Field PCs
- Field electrical plant (rack sensors, gate interlocks, light curtains, field PLC if applicable),
The facility may be also further integrated by installing the following items:
- Control room (only basic engineering is provided);
- Integration with Pomini RSMS (Roll Shop Management System)

- Z : bridge translation
- X : trolley translation
- Y : hoist movement
The loader has usually a semi-gantry layout and it runs on railways in order to cover the automatic area. This machine is different to a main crane for the following reasons:
- The machine is automated and controlled by CNC and under the supervision of a special software developed by Pomini Tenova: Win Loader
- The loader axes are controlled by absolute encoders. In this way it is possible to reach a very high accuracy without any type of adjustment during the loading of the rolls. The setting of zero position is easy and quick
- The steel structures and mechanisms are designed and manufactured according to the heavy duty conditions in which the loader will be employed. The classification of both structures and mechanisms, which is made according to the most restrictive standards, is based on the foreseen life and the use of the considered item and the load spectrum.
Innovation
Beyond Automatic Loader and Automatic Area:
Track all roll movements by main crane and automatic loader throughout roll shop, from the time rolls arrive in the roll shop to the time they leave for the mill
Provide roll inventory information that is constantly up to date for all rolls (including backup, edger, pinch, wrapper rolls…) with their current location
Automatically schedule main crane and automatic loader movements based on list of scheduled roll changes from the mill
