PDT™ Pomini Digital Texturing™
PDTTM, Pomini Digital TexturingTM, is an innovative repeatable programmable digital process based on modern fiber-optics laser heads allowing unparalleled wider range of surface possibilities in comparison to any other existing texturing technology thank to engineering of each single crater in terms of size, shape and distribution on the roll surface.
Overview
The Pomini Digital TexturingTM (PDTTM) system is an innovative technology for roll texturing developed by Pomini Tenova, opening up new possibilities for engineering of surface finishes optimized for performance of work rolls and subsequent processing of the sheet material.
The system controls dimensions, characteristics and placement of craters, allowing production and further development of an endless range of surface finishes, virtually without limitation.
- From 1 to 4 lasers on one or two carriages, easily upgradable for productivity increase
- Utilization of state-of-the-art commercial fiber optics laser heads
- Neither additional auxiliary equipment required, nor any foundation
- No toxic waste
- Minimal power consumption

Innovation
The characteristics of surface texture are measured by a parameters such as Roughness average (Ra), Peak Count (Rpc), Skewness (Rsk) and Waviness (Wa). The current texturing processes control few of these important parameters, but they usually cannot control each parameter independently of each other to create optimum surface textures per each different application.
Pomini developed a new process accurately and independently controls the Ra, Rpc, Rsk, Wa, volume of closed voids and degree of deterministic /stochastic of the texture matrix by relying on software technology to control the high frequency lasers that apply the texture to the roll surface so to assure the best combination of features in each different application.
- Digital process, simple and repeatable
- “Peak Count” controlled independently from Roughness programmable stochastic finish or deterministic finish or a combination of these two finishes
- Craters on roll surface can be individually positioned and controlled in all geometrical dimensions
- Optimal formability and paintability of the final metal product without compromises
Safety
The PDT ensures the highest level of safety for operators, according to the highest industry standards: during the automatic work cycle, the PDT is completely closed and to allow visual inspection during the process, a camera-based vision system is available; processes are controlled by SIEMENS' SAFETY INTEGRATED technology. The technological process and structure of the machine is such as to guarantee the absolute absence of any risk of fire or polluting emissions.
Automation
TENOVA POMINI uses Siemens as a supplier of Total Integrated Automation (TIA) System; each element of the automation system is interconnected and exchanges data with all the other elements:
- MOTOR DRIVE: to regulate and control the speeds of the electric motors of the axes and spindles to follow the trajectories defined by the Motion Control system;
- CNC: handles the movement of the axes and the spindles following a work program by means of which the machine performs the "Texturing Program".
- PLC: It is the unit dedicated to check the machine's operating conditions, managing safety and executing commands through the output signals, connected to all the CPUs and to the CNC.
- HMI-PC: interface between man and machine and to perform the management and the storage of process data.
- DATABASE: where process data, histories and sensor data are collected for quality analysis and machine status monitoring.
- LASER CONTROL UNIT: dedicated to the management of the laser source necessary to create the required surface.
Environment
Pomini Digital TexturingTM (PDTTM) is the first machine of the sector to be certified EPD® (Environmental Product Declaration) in accordance with ISO 14025 as per the International EPD® System, www.environdec.com. Therefore PDTTM has become “Product category rule” (PCR) of machine-tools for working materials by laser of its category.
A complete assessment of the Life-Cycle of the machine has been performed, demonstrating its minimal environmental impact. Full data are at the disposal of the Customers.
Digital
Pomini Tenova is developing an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platform to offer a new generation of services that will help Customers to properly collect, analyze and understand a large amount of informations on the equipment that the Customer is operating, among which:
- anomaly detection;
- condition based monitoring;
- Edge Computing
- predictive maintenance.
