First-ever DRI production for Baowu in China

Baowu achieves a historical milestone with ENERGIRON® in China's largest hydrogen-ready DRI facility

At the beginning of 2024, we have reached a key milestone for Baowu group, successfully producing its first Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) with our one-million-ton hydrogen-ready reactor (shaft furnace) situated at Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. in Guangdong Province, China. This remarkable achievement was accomplished less than two years after Tenova first signed its contract with Baowu group for the design and supply of its DRI plant.

The plant is the largest hydrogen-based DRI facility in China, underscoring our strong partnership with the globally renowned steel producer Baowu, which has chosen Tenova’s innovative green technologies to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. The plant employs the state-of-the-art ENERGIRON® ZR technology, jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli, which uses natural gas enriched with hydrogen, leveraging coke oven gas as the process gas, in an industry first.
