A new 2.5-Mtpy DRI plant will be installed in the Sultanate for the Jindal Steel Group company
Vulcan Green Steel, a new company within the Jindal Steel Group, has chosen ENERGIRON® technology for its new hydrogen-ready direct reduction plant in Duqm, Al Wusta Governorate, Sultanate of Oman.
The H2-ready ENERGIRON® enables the use of natural gas as a reducing agent, with the flexibility to incorporate up to 100% hydrogen based on its availability. The ENERGIRON® zero-reformer DR plant, with an initial capacity of 2.5-Mtpy for direct reduction ores, will begin operations using natural gas, progressively increasing the hydrogen blend as it becomes accessible on-site.
The single-module will hot charge an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) at temperatures exceeding 600°C, leading to substantial energy savings in the steelmaking process. The plant will also have the capability to produce Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) for storage or export.
Beyond its operational efficiency, the ENERGIRON® technology can capture CO2 from the process, using it for other applications. This not only lowers overall plant emissions but, combined with the EAF, moves the green steel hub closer to achieving carbon-neutrality. Furthermore, it introduces an additional revenue stream for plant operations.
The completion of the DRI Plant in Duqm is expected in 2026.
