Tenova reaches BOF slop detection performance guarantee for Vessel #1
ArcelorMittal South Africa, the largest supplier of flat steel products in sub-Saharan Africa, contracted Tenova Goodfellow Inc., a subsidiary of Tenova, for the supply of the Intelligent Slop Detection System (iSDS®), a digital module within Tenova’s iBOF® suite of Industry 4.0 technologies for the BOF. The system detects and initiates dynamic action to mitigate the effects of BOF slopping events.
ArcelorMittal South Africa and Tenova have jointly verified that the System Performance Guarantee has been fully achieved or surpassed for Vessel #1 at the steel mill. With this favorable outcome, ArcelorMittal SA is now moving forward with the installation of Tenova's iSDS® technology on the remaining two BOF converters.
The iSDS® technology plays a crucial role in accurately providing slop prediction and is a critical tool in the Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) operation. It continuously monitors changes in BOF lance vibration to detect the initial signs of slopping, enabling quick response and corrective action to mitigate the slopping effects, preventing significant ejection of slag and metal from the vessel. Through real-time alerts iSDS® not only offers operators advanced notice of the onset of a slop but also provides a measurement of the slop severity. To date, more than twenty Tenova iSDS® have been successfully installed or are underway in BOF shops worldwide.
