Tenova New Consteel® EAF Started-Up at JSW Steel USA

The largest Consteel® EAF in North America was started-up at Mingo Junction, JSW Group’s facility in Ohio (USA).

JSW Steel USA announced the restart of the production at its steelmaking plant in Mingo Junction, Ohio after having been suspended in July of last year. The new Tenova Consteel® EAF system was successfully started-up in conjunction with the plant reopening. The equipment will allow the mill to produce slabs, which will be converted to HRC, as well as being used to supply the company’s pipe and plate mill subsidiary in Baytown, Texas, as well as other customers.

After almost ten years of inactivity, JSW Steel decided to restart the Ohio mill and, at the beginning of 2019, contracted Tenova to replace the existing 1.5 mtpa Electric Arc Furnace with a new Tenova Consteel® EAF with the same capacity. Due to the decrease in demand caused by the COVID-19 emergency, the plant suspended production in July 2020 and used the closure of the facility to upgrade equipment.

Tenova Consteel® is the only fully tested industrial process in operation today that continuously pre-heats and feeds metallic charge into the EAF, while simultaneously controlling gaseous emissions. Thanks to this advanced technology and Tenova’s new EAF, JSW Steel Ohio is targeting slab production of 125,000 st/month.
