The new Yawata project will combine cutting-edge technology and sustainability, supporting Nippon Steel’s journey toward carbon neutrality by 2050
Tenova has been selected by Nippon Steel Corporation to supply a record-breaking Consteel® Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) for its Yawata Area at Kyushu Works. This landmark project is a significant milestone in the evolution of electric steelmaking technology.
In partnership with GE Vernova, whose Direct Feed system will power the furnace, Tenova will deliver an installation that, once operational, will become the world’s most powerful EAF, with a heat size of 340 tons. This unprecedented capacity will enable the extensive use of virgin iron units, essential for producing high-quality steel grades. GE Vernova’s Direct Feed system will ensure the high-stability power required to operate this advanced and unique facility at optimal performance.
The Yawata project represents a crucial investment in both innovation and sustainability. By facilitating the transition from traditional blast furnace operations to EAF-based steelmaking, it supports Nippon Steel’s pathway to carbon neutrality by 2050. This strategic move aligns with Japan’s Green Transformation (GX) Promotion Act and Nippon Steel’s long-term decarbonization strategy, underscoring the company’s commitment to environmentally responsible steel production.
