Tata Steel Nederland will leverage Tenova’s cutting-edge technologies for its new steelmaking line in IJmuiden
Tenova has been contracted by Tata Steel Nederland, one of Europe’s leading steel producers, to develop a new cutting-edge steel production line in IJmuiden, the Netherlands. In 2023, Tata Steel Nederland launched its Green Steel Plan, aimed at transforming liquid steel production to significantly reduce its environmental impact at the IJmuiden site. This ambitious plan centered around sustainable steel production includes installing a Direct Reduction Plant (DRP) and a new steelmaking line to replace the site's largest blast furnace (BF7) and its coke-making plant (KGF2).
As part of this initiative, Tata Steel Nederland has selected a steel production line based on an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and awarded Tenova a contract for basic engineering, which is currently underway. The contract encompasses engineering, supply, and advisory services for a three-million-ton Electric Arc Furnace, which will be equipped with Consteel® and Consteerrer®, the electromagnetic stirrer developed in partnership with ABB. Additionally, secondary metallurgy facilities, including Ladle Furnaces and RH vacuum degassers, will refine the liquid metal from the EAF to produce high-quality steel, particularly for the automotive sector.
The new plant will incorporate innovative technologies designed to minimize environmental impact, such as a Fumes Treatment Plant, a Waste Energy Recovery System, and a Dry Slag Granulation Unit. The DRP will leverage our ENERGIRON® technology, jointly developed with Danieli, selected last year.
