Tenova to supply Germany's largest Electric Arc Furnace for HKM's transformation

The project will support the transition of the Duisburg steelworks toward low-emission steel production and reinforce the role of electric steelmaking in Europe's industrial decarbonization

Tenova has been selected to supply the new Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) for Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann (HKM) in Duisburg, Germany, marking a significant step in the transformation of one of the country's historic steelmaking sites.

The new furnace, which will become the largest Electric Arc Furnace in Germany, will play a central role in HKM's transition from the traditional blast furnace route to electric steelmaking. The investment supports the long-term strategy of the plant's new owner, Salzgitter AG, and is expected to significantly reduce the site's carbon emissions while ensuring its long-term competitiveness.

The project is among the most important industrial transformation initiatives currently underway in the European steel sector, reflecting the industry's growing commitment to decarbonization through advanced electric steelmaking technologies.

The furnace will feature Tenova's Consteel® continuous charging technology combined with the Electro Magnetic Stirring System (EMS), developed in collaboration with ABB. This technology package is designed to deliver high productivity while offering greater flexibility in the use of raw materials, improved energy efficiency, reduced environmental impact and lower disturbances to the power grid.

Tenova's scope of supply includes the turnkey delivery of a 285t Consteel® Electric Arc Furnace and its auxiliary systems. Designed to produce a continuous flow of up to 380t of steel per hour, the new installation will feed HKM's existing secondary metallurgy line and slab caster. The electric arc furnace, with its design capacity of 2.5 million tons per year, will rank as the largest in Germany and one of the largest in Europe, joining a portfolio of ultra-large EAF installations delivered by Tenova across the continents.

These products will meet the demanding quality standards required by sectors such as automotive, including exposed body applications where surface quality is critical.

The furnace will be installed in a dedicated new area within the HKM production site, representing another milestone in the deployment of large-scale electric steelmaking technologies and reinforcing Tenova's commitment to supporting customers in their transition toward more sustainable and efficient production processes.
