The plant will minimize the environmental impact of urban steel production thanks to innovative and sustainable technologies.
Tenova has been awarded a contract by Vinton Steel LLC, the U.S. subsidiary of Kyoei Steel, to supply a new melt shop for its facility in El Paso, Texas. Thanks to Tenova’s Green Citymill Flex, Vinton Steel’s production capacity will increase to 400,000 tons/year while significantly reducing emissions, energy consumption, and operational costs. The contract signing took place in Osaka, Japan, with executives from both companies in attendance.
Designed to produce a wide range of long steel grades with the lowest carbon footprint on the market, the Green Citymill Flex sets new standards in efficiency, product flexibility, and environmental sustainability. The system integrates the latest generation Consteel® Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology, along with continuous casting and rolling capabilities developed in collaboration with Pomini Long Rolling Mills.
Tenova’s scope of supply includes a 45 ton Consteel® EAF with continuous scrap preheating, an in-line Ladle Metallurgy Furnace for precise steel refining, a multi-strand Continuous Casting Machine, and a fully automated Material Handling System. The project will also feature an advanced Fume Treatment Plant with a quenching tower and pulse-jet baghouse, a zero-water-consumption Water Treatment Plant, and a modern Electrical Distribution System designed to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
Techint Engineering & Construction (Techint E&C) will oversee the construction process, ensuring timely execution while maintaining the highest quality and safety standards.
With this strategic investment, Vinton Steel LLC and Tenova are driving the future of sustainable steel production, strengthening the role of green technologies in the U.S. metals industry, and meeting the growing demand for low-carbon steelmaking solutions.
