Five advanced Tenova technologies have been selected by the INCITE platform for their impact on low-carbon steelmaking, resource efficiency, and industrial decarbonization
Tenova has five of its advanced technologies featured on the INCITE (European Innovation Centre for Industrial Transformation Emissions) platform. Launched in 2024, INCITE evaluates emerging technologies contributing to decarbonization, depollution, resource efficiency, and circularity across Europe.
This recognition highlights Tenova’s role as a key enabler of the EU’s transition toward a sustainable and circular industrial economy.
Advanced Steelmaking Technologies Recognized by INCITE
The platform includes several of Tenova’s core solutions for sustainable steel production:
- ENERGIRON for Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) production
- Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) with Consteel® and Consteerrer® technologies
- Open Slag Bath Furnace (OSBF) for DRI melting
- iRecovery® and Heat Leap systems for energy recovery
- Tenova KT solutions for polymer injection in EAF
INCITE provides a detailed assessment of each technology, including environmental performance, maturity level, cost implications, and operational benefits.
Fully Operational Technologies Driving Efficiency and Sustainability
Three of the five technologies are already fully operational at industrial scale.
Consteel® and Consteerrer®
Consteel® is a continuous charging EAF technology with over 80 installations worldwide. It enables efficient melting through continuous material feeding and improved control of gaseous emissions. In collaboration with ABB, Tenova developed Consteerrer® to further enhance productivity, safety, and cost efficiency.
iRecovery® and Heat Leap
iRecovery® enables the recovery and reuse of thermal energy from EAF off-gases, which would otherwise be lost. The recovered energy can be used internally, for power generation, or for district heating. The Heat Leap system, a high-performance heat pump, further increases efficiency by utilizing low-temperature heat from cooling water.
ENERGIRON Technology
ENERGIRON is a direct reduction process based on a vertical shaft furnace, jointly developed with Danieli. It allows the production of DRI or HBI using natural gas and hydrogen, significantly reducing environmental impact. This process is typically integrated with EAF steelmaking (DRI/EAF route).
Emerging Solutions Supporting Circularity and Emissions Reduction
Two additional technologies featured on the platform are currently advancing toward broader adoption.
Open Slag Bath Furnace (OSBF / iBlue®)
The OSBF is an AC electric furnace designed for melting DRI and producing pig iron. It represents a key solution for reducing carbon emissions compared to traditional blast furnace routes.
Tenova KT Polymer Injection Systems
Tenova KT Twin SRA and Multi systems enable the injection of recycled polymers as a substitute for coal in EAF operations. These technologies support circular economy principles by reusing plastic waste. Within the EU-funded RFCS OnlyPlastic project, both systems demonstrated strong performance in slag foaming without solid material carryover into off-gas systems.
Supporting the EU Green Transition
The inclusion of these technologies on the INCITE platform confirms Tenova’s leadership in developing innovative solutions for sustainable steel production. By combining energy efficiency, emissions reduction, and circular resource use, Tenova continues to support the transformation of the metals industry toward a low-carbon future.
